Yemen is believed to be the cradle of Arab
civilization, located in the southern part of the
Saudi Arabian peninsula. Unlike neighboring
countries, Yemen doesn’t have oil deposits. Yemen is considered the poorest
country of the Middle-East. The capital is Sanaa.
In Yemen, women are limited in their educational and employment opportunities. The illiteracy rate of Yemeni women is 70%. Girls who have lost their fathers and women who have lost their husbands find it very difficult to survive. They have very few prospects in life.
Reborn started the first dressmaking project in Sanaa, Yemen, in 1999.
Since then, we have conducted training sessions there for three years (1999
to 2002) in conjunction with a local NGO. Now, the local NGO is overseeing the
Reborn operation in Sanaa and has prepared a training facility for graduates to
work as dressmakers there, both to make Reborn clothing and to produce local
clothing for sale to the public in Yemen. They can then receive remuneration
for their Reborn garments as well as through local sales. We have continued to
support them after their successful completion of our training program through
sending them materials, checking the clothing they make and selling the
finished products at Reborn sales throughout the world.
